Hi all, today I’m sharing my 5 must have plugins for your blog but before I go into details I want to apologize in advance to my SAHM friends for my posts this week. I’ll be getting back to my regular posts of more fun stuff by next week ok. You can count on it, but I just wanted to publish a series of posts for my WAHM subscribers who are interested in starting a new blog. I’ve had so many awesome peeps reach out to me and asked how hard would it be to start a blog and I just want to say it’s really easy, especially easy if you have been thinking about for a while and have a passion you think other people might share and enjoy with you 🙂
Another awesome reason to start a blog is if you wanted to make a little side money and who doesn’t these days right? I mean I love writing, it’s good for my soul and if I can share my thoughts and knowledge with a few friends and still make money doing it why the heck not!
However, before you can start making money because it ain’t gonna roll in as easily as you think. Blogging takes time, effort and frankly some work before you can actually see some traffic. When you get the traffic the money will come. It’s not easy money but if you have a strategic plan and the right tools to help make it a bit easier then it will be all worth it when you’re sleeping at night while your blog makes you rich…well maybe not rich but a few bloggers I know currently makes well over what my husband makes in a month.I'm sharing my 5 must have plugins for your blog Click To Tweet
So when you publish posts on a blog and you invite the world wide web to come read it and comment on it, you don’t always get authentic and relevant people leaving comments. You get a lot and I mean a lot of SPAM and people from countries you have never heard of stopping by and leaving links and inappropriate junk at the bottom of your post that you have just spent hours creating. Akismet is a plugin that filters out anything that looks like spam. It keeps it in a separate folder so I can go through and delete later. Kind of like your spam folder in your inbox. It’s so smart that I’ve never had a good comment from a good source end up in the spam folder and the best part of Akismet is it’s FREE.
Another FREE plugin for your new blog is Wordfence or Wordfence Security. This plugin is updated regularly and it provides the best protection for your blog and content. It’s a firewall that prevents you (your blog) from getting hacked. There is also premium support, country blocking, you can schedule scans and have password auditing. It’s great defense for your blog.
This one is a no-brainer, with anything you spend countless time on; you MUST back it up. That’s the first hard lesson any publisher will tell you they have learned. There are many options I suppose but since I already have my own Dropbox account that I back up my photos and documents on then I just use this plugin to automatically run a backup and upload it to my Dropbox. This plugin also saves a copy of the backup to a local file on WordPress as well. The best part is peace of mine… oh and did I mention it’s also FREE? How are you liking me so far? 🙂
Side note about Dropbox, I use it on my phone, desktop, laptop, tablets, installed it on my husband’s phone, parent’s phone and it all syncs and backup our photos, videos, and files. God forbid something should happen to our phones then we know that our kid’s photos are safe. There is a free plan and there are paid ones. You can also share files and invite people to folders etc. It’s truly one of my favorite apps for personal and business use.
So of all the blogs you will read when trying to educate yourself on how to grow your own, you’ll soon realize that without some basic knowledge of SEO you won’t go far. As in your blog landing on the front page of Google, Bing or some other search engine. Let me break it down. Say you are selling a product or service, chances are there’s someone else out there on the web selling the same product or service. So let’s say a random person is searching online to buy your product, good SEO will put your product first on the front page of google, so YOU get seen first instead of that other person selling the same product. Do I make sense? If not, it’s time for your next coffee!
All joking aside, Yoast SEO is another FREE plugin that you can install on your new blog and it guides and helps you with the SEO part. If it’s red, it shows you what you need to do to make it green… green means you’re all good to publish!
Sassy Social Share
Ever visit a nice blog, read an article or post you totally can relate to and want to share it with your friends or colleagues but you have to copy the link because the ‘share buttons’ don’t work or take forever? Don’t let this happen to your blog, make it easy for people to share your content. There are going to be tons and tons of social media share plugins but since I’ve been blogging for the last 5 years the Sassy Social Share plugin has proven to be the best one yet…. and trust me I’ve tried a ton. Your content gets shared over Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Whatsapp, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit and over 100 more sharing and bookmarking services. How cool is that huh? And yes, this one is also FREE.
Bonus Tip with any Social Share plugin you install on your blog, go ahead in the settings and include your twitter handle (Mine looks like this @Faithfully_Me_K) so when users share your content over twitter you also get tagged.
